First Annual Meeting of Election Management Bodies, 2011
On February 9-11, 2011 Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia hosted election administrations of the region in Georgia. Meeting was conducted in Sighnaghi. Within the frames of the official visit the guest alsovisited cultural and historical sightseeings of Kakheti region. The main goal of the meeting was to share international experience of election processes of various countries, develop cooperation in the region, and establish tighter connection among election administrations. At the meeting the sides discussed the ways of elaborating principles for future cooperation.
Representatives of the election administrations of 9Eastern European countries participated in the meeting. Heads and members of election administrations from Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia and Ukraine represented their experiences and discussed the ways to elaborate joint methods in order to improve the election environment in the region.
United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) representatives also participated in the meeting. The event was supported by the mentioned international organizations.
“We believe working with various election administrations from different countries and learning about their practices is an important way to develop the electoral environment and implement international electoral standards”- declared Mr. Zurab Kharatishvili, the CEC Chairperson.
In order to share the experiences and implement the joint projects,the election administration representativesagreed to arrange the similar meetings in the future as well.
